1997 was the last year the GRAAL
functionned with principles based on voluntary
workers. Still, other actions were introduced:
- Opening of the Archives Office
(Dunkerque's Archivist became vice-president of
the association), with wich a cooperative work is
begun, change of status (a A for Archives was
added to the association's name)
-First interventions into the
holidays camps, and first animations
(reconstitutions of excavaions...)

1998

- In 1998, the GRAAL and its active members developed a
"Emploi Jeune", offering contracts with no
limit of duration (CDI) to 6 persons. those creations
were approved in november. The purpose was to create a
new structure focused on the protection and reemphasis on
the archeological, archivistic and architectural
patrimony around three themes:
Prevention-Animation-Research and to gather the different
financial partners of the project, which led to the
signing of a convention with the Urban Community of
Dunkerque. A new modification of our status adds a L to
the acronym (which bcame GRAALL), which stands for free
(Libre), and extends our area of action to 300 km around
Dunkerque.
- This year not only
allowed us to try new animations in holidays camps,
focused around the discovery of archeology, but also
around the active participation to the reconstitution of
ancient housings and places. The animation in schools has
known an important development with the employing of a
full time youth leader, and our getting involved in the
agglomeration contract.
- An inventory of the
archeological potential of three towns of the CUD was
done, based on maps, photos and archeological basis.
- Finally, a rescue
excavation was done in Hondschoote from May to August,
followed of a study of ceramics and metal objects found
there.
1999

This year, the Emploi Jeune projects, developed
as planned around the three axis
Prevention-Animation-Research was started. At the end of
the year, two other persons were hired, while the whole
staff got an increase of wages. Another one was hired in
February 2000.
2000
PREVENTION :
· Envoi de brochures explicatives aux
aménageurs et aux communes.
· Mise en place de surveillances de travaux à partir
d'une revue de presse et du calendrier des travaux
communiqués par les services techniques de la CUD dans
le cadre de notre conventionnement.
· Fouille diagnostic réalisée Place Emile Bollaert à
Dunkerque.
ANIMATION :
1. SCOLAIRE
· Poursuite de l'action entreprise avec un
élargissement à d'autres écoles, collèges et Lycées
(5 classes).
2. C.L.S.H.
· Développement, amélioration et enrichissement
des animations proposées durant les Centres Aérés, les
deux thèmes principaux restant la découverte de
l'archéologie et la reconstitution de cadres de vie. Ce
projet a été étendu à 5 communes.
3. D.S.U.
· Conventionnement du G.R.A.A.L. avec la ville de
Dunkerque et la Région Nord-Pas-de-Calais dans le cadre
du Développement Social Urbain : préparation et gestion
d'animation dans divers quartiers de Dunkerque.
Le GRAAL s'est également investi dans le développement
d'un maillage associatif, en participant aux actions et
manifestations d'associations aussi bien culturelles que
patrimoniales ou environnementales (adhésion à la
Maison de l'Environnement de Dunkerque). Ceci afin de
développer des projets, essentiellement pédagogiques,
organisés conjointement grâce aux compétences de
chacun.
RECHERCHE :
· Développement du projet Européen Interreg
II " 1000 ans d'histoire, 50 ans de recherche "
dont la signature en Décembre a marqué le début d'une
coopération entre la ville de Coxyde, celle de Bergues
et le G.R.A.A.L. alliant travaux d'inventaires et mise en
valeur de sites et d'archives dans le but de développer
le tourisme patrimonial interfrontalier.
· Travaux de dépouillement d'archives
· Inventaire Archéologique Cantonal pour le Service
Départemental de l'Archéologie
· Formation : Fouilles avec le Canterbury Archeological
Trust du Kent (G.B.), stages en archives.
En effet depuis 1989, date de sa création, l'association
(alors Groupe de Recherche Archéologique du Littoral
Dunkerquois.) réalisait des sondages ou diagnostics
archéologiques durant la période estivale, et
accueillait sur ces chantiers de nombreux bénévoles
dont un certain nombre participait ensuite aux travaux
d'études post-fouilles. Cela fut le cas sur les
chantiers de Loon-Plage Ferme Debergh et site
Gallo-Romain. Une série de prospections pédestres a
également été réalisée.
